Consistent Running Training Philosophy

The focus at Consistent Running is a long term love of running, with an emphasis on running economy.

I base my coaching, not on any system, but on the latest science and research into training theory, including load management, running economy, strength and conditioning, mental training, and injury risk management.

I am influenced by many great coaches from the past and present, as well as exercise scientists and experts in other fields. When I'm not running myself, I'm usually working on training plans, reading a running-related book or catching up on the latest research into running .

By focusing on the process rather than results, using well-proven, science-backed training principles, I aim to work with the runner to achieve their goals.

Getting Started with Consistent Running is simple.

After an email or chat to discuss your running goals and the training process, I’ll get to know you, your time commitments, training history, and both short term and long term goals. I'll then write a 'Zoomed out' plan that is the rough framework for your training over the coming weeks/months.
The finer details of weekly workouts are filled in as you progress, and we work together to develop a dynamic training plan to build running efficiency, strength, mental approach, and ultimately, reach your long term running goals by focussing on the process. Continually learning and adapting over time.

It’s on you to lace up your running shoes, but I will be there every step of the way to answer questions, inspire, motivate, and guide your training.

All training plans are delivered and analysed using an online training platform called Intervals.icu. It provides basic and advanced analytics and planning in an easy to use web interface with support for desktops, phones and tablets. The platform can be customised for each individual athlete to help provide the best management of short and pong term training planning and analysis.

HAPPY RUNNING

I want each and every athlete I train to enjoy their running. It’s the most simple but also the most important principle. That may mean that at times you back off or mix up your approach to training.

My number one goal as a coach is to help you enjoy a long term love of consistent running. I'm always happy to answer any questions or have a chat at races or group runs. If you have any questions feel free to message me and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
After being plagued by injury and severe lack of motivation, I engaged Glen to help me get back into running in 2019. Over the past two years I've managed to build the most wonderful coaching relationship with Glen, and he has weathered all of the emotions that have surfaced along the way 😂. I'm a mother of 4 who works full time and Glen has been able to work with  my availability (and at time adjust literally "on the run") to ensure I get the most out of my sessions and hit my goals. In the past two years I've remained injury free, and hit PBs over 5k, 10k, 21.1k, 42.2k, 50k and now 80k!! I trust Glen completely and have fallen back in love with running. Be consistent. Trust the process. Did someone say 100k?

Wow! if you want to take your running to the next level...and some! I couldn't recommend Glen highly enough. No matter what level you are at Glen will help you get to the next. for many years I've always been a very middle of the mid pack runner, after using Glen for a few months I was soon working my way up towards the front. I've used him for two of my major events and will definitely be using him again.

Glen’s sense of humour and kind, friendly manner make him a pleasure to work with. He takes into account your lifestyle and commitments and sets the workouts to suit. He provides regular feedback on my runs and answers any queries I have promptly and with lots of detail. With less than 3 weeks to go to my first ultra, I am feeling confident that I will finish strong and injury-free. I’ve already signed up for my next race and I know Glen will get me prepared for the challenge. I can recommend Glen for both beginner runners or those with more experience.

I’ve been a consistent runner for over two years now, and during that time I have learnt so much from Glen. I learnt not to focus on training for races, but rather to train year-round, build a solid base, and to just tweak my training for races. Glen’s coaching is well rounded, balancing the “wants and needs” of the runner. His approach is evidence-based and effective. I highly recommend Glen’s coaching to set you up for a lifetime of consistent running.

I signed up with Consistent Running after I registered for my first ultra, UTA50 in the Blue Mountains. Both were the right decision.Glen wrote the program specifically for me, tailored to my goals, race, capabilities and availability. But it also allowed me to train with friends - long runs on the trails are more fun with buddies! Glen provided continued motivation, advice and feedback on my sessions, which I found really useful as I like to know I'm doing things right. He got me to the start line excited, confident mentally and physically ready. Thanks Glen for making the four months of training fun, I really enjoyed the variety and challenges. Also for helping me complete a bucket list race (and have now added more!)I can definitely recommend Consistent Running 😀

Since being coached by Glen, I have found my overall fitness and pace improved. It is indeed all about consistency, and Glen works with my capabilities and works to get me to my goals. He is spot on with communication, always looking out for me to make sure I'm feeling 'en pointe', checks in to see how I'm going, is always happy to respond to me with my ridiculous queries, and if there are any changes that need to be made to my schedule just in case life gets in the way - because that happens, let's be real. If you want to reach a goal, whether it be a speedy 5k or hit your first ultra-distance, Glen at Consistent Running is the coach to get you there.

ABOUT
GLEN

My number one goal as a coach is to help you enjoy a long term love of consistent running and I am very grateful that every day,
I have the honour and privilege to help others achieve their dreams.

I am very passionate about running and have completed over 40 Ultra Marathons up to 350km, as well as many other endurance events.

I am a Level 2 Advanced Recreational Running Coach, accredited with Athletics Australia. I also have over 20 years experience as a Podiatrist, with a special interest in biomechanics, footwear and the running gait.

My desire to stay up to date with the current research into all things coaching and running related, together with a strong interest in the history of running and coaching methods allows me to adapt your training to best suit your current situation.

I am always working on finding the best methods and training practices that will help you reach your running goals, whether they are completing a 5km to a marathon (or longer).

I'm always happy to answer any questions or have a chat at races or group runs. If you have any questions feel free to message me and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
I Always Train The Individual, Not The System
I Customise training based on how each individual is responding and their current work/life/training balance. I adapt the training plan around the individual, rather than the other way around. Rather than giving an athlete big training blocks, the training is usually delivered in 3-7 day blocks and adjusted as needed.
Always Take The Next Logical Step In Training
While this may seem boring at times, there are no shortcuts to be taken. Never try to force progress or PBs. Nail the foundations, provide the right support workouts for the goals you are working towards and the breakthroughs will come without the higher injury/burnout risks involved when skipping steps.
Consistency & Non_linear Periodisation
Consistency is the key to all things running. A plan following linear periodisation focuses on specific elements during each phase, a base stage may not include any fast running at all.

With a non-linear plan, there is less distinction between the phases of training and each element will be trained, just at varying levels.  If you aren’t building a specific element of your training, you still need to maintain it.  A good rule is to never let the body forget what it feels like to… run fast, do aerobic work, strength train etc.

Enjoy Your Running & Have Fun
It’s the most simple but also the most important principle. That may mean that at times you back off or mix up your approach to training. My number one goal as a coach is to help you enjoy a long term love of consistent running.
